Even though you have a great deal of control over what happens to your companions, they have a lot more agency than your usual RPG party members, including when it comes to romance, where they're usually the ones to instigate the change in your relationship. They have arguments and disagreements and agendas that are at odds with each other. And they never feel like they're just playing a supporting role.

really embraces what makes D&D so compelling: playing pretend. The characters often comment on the events of the plot, and also ask you, the player, what you think about things. As you react to the world, it fills in around you in your imagination, bolstered by the excellent character writing and voice acting from your companions.

Just like in Dungeons & Dragons, players will be able to multiclass, i.e. adopt two different Classes at the same time. While there are a lot of great combinations of Class proficiencies and abilities that you can get from multiclassing, there are some drawbacks you should be aware of. Firstly, Class levels will have to be split among both Classes.

As ever with Larian, choice and consequence is at the heart of the game. Almost everything done in the stream was based on a choice from a collection of options. Early on we saw a gnome strapped to a windmill by goblins, and it was the player’s choice how to approach the situation.

There's also Baldur's Gate 3 skills and we can tell you more there from the basics of your character's skills, including how each one might play out in the game and which will benefit you the most.

Just recently started playing BD3. Pleased to say it is very close to live role play, it is feeling very realistic. Done three very shorts runs and each time the game has developed totally different, which is cool. Choices and actions really do make a difference.

It's the first choice you're faced with: should you remove or destroy the brain in Baldur's Gate 3? Destroying it will effectively skip the tutorial help, so we suggest not doing that if this is your first time playing. What happens when you free it, and should you mutilate it? Well, check the guide to find out.

The sheer number of magical items you'll encounter in your playthrough is enough to fill every shelf in Sorcerous Sundries, Baldur's Gate's premier magical shop, a hundred times over. And many of them give you new spells and skills, completely changing your build. After finding a lot of lightning-themed gear I turned Gale into an invincible, electricity-spewing bomb who could just walk through the battlefield spitting out death while being completely immune to the fallout.

With each act, there's not just a change in location but a change in tone as well. Act 2 has the most dramatic turn, with its shift into pure horror, all curses and twisted monsters and traumatised NPCs. There are shades of Dark Souls and Bloodborne here, laden with an oppressive atmosphere and some truly unsettling creature designs.

Navigating the Baldur's Gate 3 Dank Crypt is tricky business. The trap you'll find down there is something fresh out of Saw, with the room filling with a mystery black grease as all the doors fuse shut.

We’ve already seen how skill checks are part of conversations, and that they require you to actively roll dice to discover the outcomes. However, it appears that passive skill checks are also a thing that are activated while exploring the world. During the section of the stream spent exploring the Underdark, player character Lae’zel is seen automatically making a passive Baldur's Gate 3 GamePlay Nature check upon discovering a Torchstalk plant.

As well as using spells, your Baldur's Gate 3 weapons come in handy for hand-to-hand combat. Some weapons are magical, some ordinary and others can only be acquired by completing a specific quest line. With so many out there to collect and choose from, check out the guide for an in-depth look.

If it wasn't obvious from the whole owlbear meteor thing, Baldur's Gate 3's fights are wonderfully anarchic. It's a turn-based deal (outside of combat it's real-time by default, but with the option to switch to turn-based when you, say, want to perfectly time a sneaky infiltration of a monster-filled ruin) and is thus a bit slower than its predecessors when blood's getting spilled. It's also so much better.

The player doesn’t have to manually roll for the check, but because it succeeds Lae’zel then speaks dialogue explaining that the Torchstalk will explode if approached. A failed check would not reveal that information, and so players could accidentally blow themselves up.
